A friend with a head full of ideas

Orumi

Orumi has blue and red fur, a smile on his belly, and a head full of thoughts that can become real. He only has to think of the ocean to find himself meeting a whale. He could conjure up almost anything, yet he prefers exploring, trying things, and meeting others for himself. He makes no plans, often changes his mind, and is very happy being himself. In his colouring adventures, an ordinary idea can take you a long way. You choose the colours of the journey.

  • An imagination without a plan
  • Happy being himself
  • Cares for his friends

FROM THE DESTINAT STORIES

Every world
has a beginning.

Have you met my friends already? Good. Now meet me. My name is Orumi. I am not human. I am not an alien either. And if you are looking for the right word for me, you can put the dictionary down for a moment. People have tried. Apparently the closest they got was "odd". I am quite comfortable with that.

I do very few things according to a plan. Actually, none. Apparently you are supposed to decide what to do, get everything ready, and only then begin. By the time I finished all those preparations, I would probably want to do something else. I decide just before I act. Sometimes I change my mind along the way.

I do not say much. I think a lot. About good things I could do. About whales I would like to leave a peaceful ocean for. About quokkas in Australia, who look as though they have just heard an excellent joke. And sometimes I think so strongly about a place that a moment later I am there.

I also like making things with my own paws. One afternoon I sat in the forest with a colouring pencil and started colouring a flower. I could have had it in front of me immediately, but I wanted to see how it would look with one red petal and another blue. When I looked up, it was growing out of the page. Apparently I had been thinking about it a little too hard.

More from this story

I have blue and red fur, a curl on my head, and a smile on my belly. Yes, on my belly. The one on my face is mine too. Apparently one was not enough. I do not remember ordering a second, but since it is here, it can stay.

For example, right now I fancy pasta with basil. I think about it, click my toes, and there is a bowl in front of me. The clicking is not necessary. I just like it. The basil smells lovely, the pasta is warm, and I can consider something really important: would anyone like to eat with me?

People say I am a wizard. But I do not have a spell book or a cauldron. I do not have to remember whether a potion needs three leaves or four. I think, and there it is. If I needed a wand, I would first have to remember to think of one. Then I would probably use it to prop up my basil.

Someone once asked why I do not think of a huge treasure, a palace, and everything I could need for the rest of my life. I could. But I do not even know what I will feel like after lunch. What would I do with a palace if I would rather lie on a cloud in the evening? And why would I want an entire adventure ready-made when I enjoy finding out what happens along the way?

I know, I know. This is coming from someone who just conjured up lunch. I am not always consistent. But I do eat my pasta before it gets cold.

Recently I was wondering what a whale's song sounds like. Suddenly everything around me turned blue, sunlight rippled far above my head, and an enormous eye swam past. The water was a little cold. Before I could decide whether that bothered me, I remembered Australia. A moment later I was sitting on warm sand beside a quokka. Water dripped from my fur. She looked very pleased with the meeting.

Not every thought changes something straight away. Otherwise that pasta would appear every time I talked about it. But some ideas are so clear that the world seems to hear them. Sometimes I am curious about what it will hear next.

Changing shape is different. I can think about a flower, study its petals, and imagine what it feels like to sway in the wind. I will still be Orumi. Only when I agree in my mind that I really want to change can I become a flower myself.

It is a pleasant thing to do, although it means standing in one place. Once a bee landed on me, and I decided to wait a little longer before turning back. Apparently she had something to get done. Then I got my paws back and went looking for my friends. I like finding out what it feels like to be something else. I like being myself very much too.

I do not know how to get angry. Worrying does not come easily either. When something turns out differently from what I wanted, another idea usually comes into my head. But I do not expect everyone to be like me. If someone is sad, I can sit beside them. There is no need to think of something to say straight away. Or to ask them to smile just because I have a smile even on my belly.

Nubo and Fira know I can suddenly disappear. I am learning to remember to tell them where I am going first. Especially when we are halfway through lunch together. I can find myself far away in an instant, but when we walk together, I am happy to go at their pace. It would be a shame to miss something they wanted to show me.

And my style? That is another matter. A few patches, a few curls, a little shell, colours that feel happy beside one another. Nobody knows what to call it. Apparently even artificial intelligence would need some time to think about it. I simply call it "no style". It suits me. Nothing has to be matched to it.

Do not ask exactly where I came from. Whenever I try to remember, I think of somewhere I would like to visit. I am curious about the answer too. Perhaps we will find it together one day.

For now, I am making my way into colouring books. You can discover my adventures there and add something of your own. See my fur? Today it is blue and red. On your page, it can look any way you like. I would be curious to see even green pasta and a purple cloud. Although I might ask how much basil you had added to the first one.

That is enough about me. At least for now. You can open your colouring book. Meanwhile, I will think about where we should begin. Oh, I know...
